Sage leaf is traditionally used in herbal medicine to reduce excess sweating. This is a popular supplement for women who want to take a plant-based approach to aiding uncomfortable symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and excess perspiration.
Recommended adult dose: 2 capsules 2 times daily or as directed by a health care practitioner. Consult a health care practitioner for use beyond 4 months.
Even though menopause is a natural phase of life, many women experience unpleasant menopausal symptoms that can disrupt their daily routines, sleep patterns, and overall well-being. The amount of estrogen and other hormones secreted by the ovaries declines during this stage of life, altering how the body regulates its temperature (Dadfar & Bamdad, 2019). More than 85% of women experience regular hot flashes during the transition into menopause, often resulting in excessive perspiration and sweating (Bansal & Aggarwal, 2019; Moradi et al., 2023). Symptoms accompanying perimenopause and menopause vary in severity and can last anywhere from six months to more than 10 years (Maggini et al., 2023). Conventional therapies for menopausal symptoms, such as hormone replacement therapy, can pose health risks for certain women, leading many to seek plant-based support (Dadfar & Bamdad, 2019).
Sage (Salvia officinalis) has a long history of use as both a culinary herb and a traditional medicinal herb (Ghorbani & Esmaeilizadeh, 2017). The aromatic leaves contain estrogen-like compounds, including flavonoids and lignans, with the unique ability to help control excessive sweating and perspiration through their activity on the central nervous system and neurotransmitters (Moradi et al., 2023; Maggini et al., 2023). Sage leaf powder and its extracts have been clinically researched for alleviating the onset and degree of excessive sweating, hot flashes, and many other menopause symptoms (Moradi et al., 2023).
A systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of sage on menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women. Researchers found that women who supplemented with sage extracts at doses of 100–300 mg/day for at least four weeks experienced significant reductions in their frequency of hot flashes (including associated sweating) (Moradi et al., 2023).
A double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial on postmenopausal women found that supplementation with 300 mg of sage extract daily reduced the frequency of night sweats by more than threefold after three months of intervention. Sage extract was also found to improve other menopausal symptoms covered by the Menopause Rating Scale, such as flushing, physical discomfort, and sleep problems (Zeidabadi et al., 2020).
In addition to reducing the frequency of climacteric symptoms, some studies show that sage can help alleviate the intensity of symptoms. A clinical study of 45–55-year-old women found that the severity of night sweats declined by 43% after four weeks of supplementing with 100 mg of sage extract (Dadfar & Bamdad, 2019).
Various studies have evaluated the safety of consuming phytoestrogens, such as those in sage, on estrogen-related health conditions. Despite its estrogen-like activity in the body, evidence shows no adverse effects on hormone-related conditions when sage is taken at established therapeutic doses (Kargozar et al., 2017).

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the purpose of taking Sage? Sage helps to cool the body – regardless of where the body’s “heat” is coming from or what it is being caused by – for example: perspiration, night sweats, hot flashes, etc.
Where is the Sage sourced from?
The source of the Sage is dried leaves and it is of European origin.
Can I take Sage if I am pregnant or when I am breastfeeding?
Sage taken medicinally (ie/in tincture or standardized extract form) is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation. Sage in the form of an herb for culinary purposes is fine however.
Can I take Sage if I am done breastfeeding, but my milk supply is not diminishing?
Yes, sage is an astringent herb and can be helpful to dry up breast milk production.
I am in menopause, but other than hot flashes I have no other symptoms. Could I take Sage all on its own?
Yes, for sure! Sage works incredibly well and very quickly for relieving hot flashes.
I am a male, with hot flashes and perspiration issues. Can I take Sage from your WomenSense line?
Yes, there would be no problems with men taking sage for excess perspiration, but men who experience hot flashes should perhaps (in addition to supplementing with Sage) consult their ND or GP for a checkup as this can sometimes indicate underlying hormone issues.
Is WomenSense Sage gluten free?
Yes, we do have confirmation on file that there is no gluten added and no gluten present in the WomenSense Sage formula. However, our manufacturing facility is NOT a gluten free facility, and as we do process products that contain gluten we are unable to confirm 100% that there is no possibility of cross contamination.
